In the comic, adults DID speak normally, but they were mostly on TV. CB’s father openly spoke once, with actual text, but off panel. He was playing with Snoopy during his birthday.
The wah-wah was just one of the ways the TV cartoons debased and desecrated the newspaper comics. Enough of Schulz’s genius survived that unfortunate generations still got hooked on the TV versions, but it’s too bad TV didn’t get Peanuts 100% or even 80% right.

He must have bad hearing, because on TV, the adults “talking” was done with a mute, and this trombone doesn’t have one.
