I’m old enough to remember when Memorial Day was May 30th. And it annoyed me then, and it still does that they moved it to the nearest Monday, just so they could have a three-day weekend. A day in the middle of the week was special and made you stop and think what the holiday was for. Not what it seems to be today. An extended weekend to have fun.
I’m old enough to remember when it was called ‘Decoration Day’, and I’d go with my parents to the grave sites of my departed relatives, and we’d decorate those sites with flowers and flags. Yesterday, I went to the grave site of my parents and decorated their site with an American flag for my dad, and some artificial flowers for my mom. I also took my string trimmer with me to get rid of all the over grown grass at the site. Looked very nice when I left, and I saw many people doing the same at their loved one’s sites.
I think I would giver Sally an “A” because her sentiments reflect mine. As I said in Comments to another strip:
I can remember when holidays were just that – days set apart for remembering specific events. Families would gather because no one had work or school. Maybe if we eliminate the “Monday Holiday Bill” and go back to commemorating events on the original dates established we will truly begin to remember and honor the individuals and events the holidays are supposed to honor. Put “duty, honor, country” ahead of the almighty dollar.
Sally is actually on the right track—turning Memorial Day into a three-day weekend for fun and games has nothing whatever to do with memorializing those who have fought, bled, suffered, and died for our country. Charles Schulz always honored our veterans, something the lawmakers who changed Memorial Day to create a long weekend failed to do. Change it back!!
I fly my flag on the real holiday and was asked once why I was flying the flag – guess teaching about Pearl Harbor is not done anymore. As a child I was thrilled to be able to put flags on veterans’ graves on Decoration Day!
A few Memorial Days ago, our next-door neighbor grinned at us across the fence and hollered, “Happy Memorial Day!” I believe she had no idea what the holiday was for.
Do they TEACH HISTORY in school anymore? Monday or May 30th everyone should know what today is about and Pearl Harbor is not just a movie. All those men died for our freedom, Not to give us 3 day holidays.

Since so many schools no longer teach cursive writing, how many kids are looking at this strip today and asking why it’s in a foreign language?

If it’s to explain Memorial Day, you failed, if it’s to explain on what you’re going to do on your three day vacation, you passed.

Just think, in the next generation school kids won’t be able to read this comic strip.
