Aaannnd, and dynamic convergence begins to take shape…

Many of us called it, this arc was about putting Jack and Luann together.

Everything else – since January – was nothing more than plot device.

I actually prefer “Ain’t I?” to “Aren’t I?” You might say “I ain’t,” but you’d never say “I aren’t”!

Good job Jack of cheering up Luann.

Jack’s shirt and pants remind me of the (original) Star Trek uniforms for science/medical officers—minus the insignia! Maybe Gunther can fix that…

Luann, Jack’s already broken your foot (not your heart), you’ve seen Jack nude, and you both like dogs; time to take it to the next level

Time for a hard-to-swallow pill: saying “it’s not you (or me); it’s them” is why people have a hard time improving themselves and becoming someone that people actually want to date. It’s a cop-out meant to prevent any introspection by placing all the blame on the other person. In this case, Doug clearly left for a reason, one most likely related to something Luann said it did. But Jack’s so interested in sucking up to Luann that he’s acting like Doug’s actions occurred in a vacuum and that Luann has nothing to do with it, thereby ensuring that my prediction would come true: that Luann would learn absolutely nothing from this failed date. So I suppose I owe Jack a thank-you, except I didn’t want to be proven right here. I actually don’t take pleasure in seeing the strip live down to my low expectations of it.

It does look like Luann wants to take Jack’s hand and lay a big wet one on him.

What a lovely couple. Jack is able to cheer up Luann and tell her how he does when someone don’t like him. They looks so happy together!

We’ll just have to see if this leads somewhere.

All the same, I like Jack, and I think he’s a good fit for Luann.

Jack just sat and watched Luann have a date with another guy. In real life, that’s a clear signal that he’s not interested in her himself. This is all so lazy on the part of the authors. They never even bothered to draw more of Doug than his hand, wet learned nothing about him, and no one has any idea why he got up and left. This whole arc fizzles to nothing and resets to Jack and Luann as friends who sometimes sound like they’re tepidly flirting.

so where to now? only partway thru the week.

One thing I like to point out: Luann has in the past been breathlessly and immaturely enamoured of a boy, including Quill, although he liked her too, at least, and told her. It turned out in the end that his career in theater was more important than her, to her mind, and they broke up that hard either. Jack and Luann are comfortable with each other, natural friends, but no obvious romantic interest in each other, but GnK, have been leaving all kinds of subtle hints of possible interest, its just that as Cheapskate says, in this arc the hints are not subtle. This panel demonstrates their understanding that they think so well of each other. Trust me Jack really, really likes Luann, he wants to be sure she feels the same way. And he is a MAN, not a goofy boy. Luann is beginning to realize that this big, goofy guy, is not goofy, has a big heart, and he cares about, and is protective of her. How slapped in the face do we have to be Greg? Now maybe Gunther has a romantic interest, and hopefully Luann. Hmmmm.

Jack and Luann. Hmm. I dunno.

I suspect “fans” are going FORCE a “relationship” here. At least for the time being. But it’s cool. It’s about time ALL of these “kids” went out and had FUN. Lately, the only people having “Fun,” are Oldsters, like Al and Irma and Ann and Tom. That’s okay too, but NOT fair to the young folks.

And as I’ve said elsewhere, there’s a LOT Jack and Luann can LEARN from each other, along the way.

BUT will Luann being with Jack have the SAME dramatic impact as Brad and Toni. I DOUBT it. So far, there’s no real, clear, “conflict” as it was with B&T. (Although I suspect the main source of “conflict” HERE, will be one party wanting to remain “friends,” while the other, wants to PUSH the “relationship” forward)

And don’t forget. As much as fans wanted it, Luann and Quill ENDED. And NO amount of “begging and hand wringing” CHANGED That.

But. I’ve got a feeling that We have two nice rides (Lu&Jack And Gunny&Bets) coming up. And unless she managed to get Doug’s cell number, one Bad Trip, Tiffany & Les.

Let’s have fun traveling down the highway, while we try to IGNORE , that “Rough Patch Of road……….., “ ;)

I’m waiting to see where Greg takes the Luann/Jack story along with Gun/Bets. The potential fly in the ointment for Jack and Luann will probably be Tara and the fact she’s “fun” and “flighty” and her and Jack have a few things in common while Luann needs someone to “challenge” her to break her well worn ways.Cheers!

Well Jack wouldn’t look so much like a “goofy ape” if he were drawn more like in the Kidz Place Exercise episode. Now he looks more like the bowling-ball-to-Luann’s-foot episode. The whole Jack arc has been confusing and uneven.

Speaking of Kidz Place, didn’t Jack allude to a job as a trainer at some gym? You know, no one pointed out the necessity for physical trainer certifications at that time re Jack. But some were all over Tiffany in the manicure episode and also Brad, Tony and TJ for lack of building permits.

Jack’s a great guy but I think readers are trying to make too much of him. At least in his arc so far.

I love this! Best friends falling for each other make the best kinds of relationships. :) I hope they figure it out soon! :D I’m totally team Jack!

I can hardly believe the same folks that are gaga over a Luann and Jack romance were just as enthused a few weeks ago, but with Luann and Gunther. Who can forget the suggestions that Gunny follow Luann out to her car after the “great escape” and engage in some lip lock action under the street light.

I think it is possible that Greg puts Jack’s niche is as Luann’s male BFF. She still has Bernice, but usually only in Sundays. (Grin) There is a niche for such a character and we’ve seen it played out time after time with Jack and Luann.

The Gulag episode with Gunther showed that Greg is still toying with a Luann-Gunther return. Gman has changed radically since he moved out. He’s shaved. He stood up to Les – verbally and physically. He and Luann renewed their romantic proclivities. He’s (probably) dating another female even as this Luann and Jack series continues. We’ll see more of Gman and Luann. (So let it be written. So let it be done. – sorry Yul Brenner)

Did Luann like Doug at all? She doesn’t mention that. Why does she care what he thinks if she didn’t even like him?

The biggest problem is this whole scenario reeks of immaturity. Its like they are still in high school , acting like children. having someone chaperone a date , and all these people watching etc. its so high school. maybe doug noticed and took the hint thst this girl really has insecurity issues if shes needing all these people to watch her on a date. Is evans ever going to let these people grow up and stop acting like theyre still 14.

I removed a post that caused offense, which unfortunately eliminated all of the responses including my own (which explained my use of the earlier comparison). I will substitute with a more benign suggestion which is that if Jack is going to become Luann’s romantic interest I hope he has a more realistically shaped head, much like Brad’s cartoonish head transformed when he got involved with Toni. The main problem with Jack is that he initially was introduced as a caricature and artistically speaking he hasn’t entirely evolved from that.

Tiffany didn’t seem to regard Jack as a goofy ape; she has made clear her interest in him. Luann still might hear back from Doug via text in which he explains his abrupt departure. Maybe he will text Luann sometime while she’s with Jack. G&K seem to like creating all this complexity.

To Luann, this is just another Jack-in-the-box situation. Pop up when I need you. Reminds me of Herman’s Hermits singing, "I’m Henry the Eighth, I am, with Jack being the latest “Henry.” But, as of now, this relationship lacks intensity, the spontaneous reflex to touch, the mutual desire to touch, the hesitation and then the clutch and grab. It may be gentle, or Luann may throw him against his truck and treat him like a pagan sacrifice.

Jack is showing a lot more normal and emotional intelligence the when we started with him.

I love Luann with Jack! And this from someone who wanted Quill to come back; not anymore (unless it doesn’t turn out well between L & J). L & J have fun together, it’s easy being together, they’re just plain good together. And just like Brad and Toni had a very long journey (arc) to their HEA, I can see that with L & J.

Mere interesting banter, or the beginning of Something More?

Think back. What was Luann’s first opinion of Jack? (A big, hairy ape!)

I’ve said this before. If Luann and Jack get into a relationship, then, sooner or late, Jack will be written ot of the strip. Luann in a committed relationship with someone who likes and respects her is not going to provide anywhere near as much entertainment.

Note that Cathy ended when Cathy married Irving, and Jane’s World ended when Jane married Dorothy.

If Jack and Luann get together, then either eventually Jack goes, or the strip ends and they live happily ever after.
