Dez hasn’t gotten to the “best” part yet! No electricity! Which means no smartphones, laptops, Skype, or internet! Nothing but “meditating” and organic foods. And ONLY organic foods that have “agreed” to be eaten!
Of course they aren’t going to do it, but they really might want to talk to Tiffany about the last time SHE “went into the woods,” and had a close encounter with fire ants……, ;)
So yet another arc unconnected to previously unfinished arcs would begin as they set up a camp and get assorted bug bites, while totally forgetting the idea of what career Luann might follow, or whether the people checking out of the dorm followed Bernice’s directions, or why Bernice didn’t get the internship she wanted, and what happens next with Tiffany, etcetera…
Do not listen to that ding-dong, Dez. It took us….what? 10,000 years to get out of those caves we lived in? Now, you want to go back to some place that doesn’t even have a cappuccino bar. Kerrr-rap, you get an itch and some other critter scratches it. Go away, Dez. Make some tea.
I can see them roughing it – all of them sitting around a fire eating some type of roasted rodent or another. Perhaps some fried grasshoppers tossed with sagebrush for seasoning. And make sure the tent has an integrated groundcloth, otherwise you might wake up with some critter cuddled up next to you for warmth. And I do not mean Gunther or Jack.
Bernice in the woods coated in anti-mosquito spray, sitting on a dry log by a smoky campfire surrounded by noisy wild animals and slapping the occasional ant crawling up her leg. The girl will have a nervous breakdown before the next morning comes.
Camping is one of the greatest things to do. Being in a forest, a mountain, near a river, a lake or a beach with only a tent and a few things makes you love life. Under the rain or in the warmer sun is always a great experience. Just thinking about it makes me want to plan a new trip tor the summer. Luann MUST go! It’s awesome and going with Dez must be even better. She must go even if Bernice don’t! It’s time for her to bond more with her new people. Inviting Tara, Prudence (maybe even Jack and Nill) would be a great idea!
There are ways to camp without depriving yourself of everything. You can go to organized facilities that have showers, and bathrooms, but you still pitch a tent. Or you can rent a cabin, yet still have outdoor campfires. There is no need to be completely cut off. AND Yes even WIFI.
At first I had second thoughts about the ladies taking Tara. Her skills with a bow and arrow would be useful for “hunting” for food. But then I thought, Nah, Dez wouldn’t allow them to harm animals, and some “folks” would complain, LOUDLY.But I am curious if Dez’s menu will include “insects.” ;)
The camping trip sounds wonderful, except for the insects. Winter is the best time to camp. I don’t care how cold it gets—if you have a mummy sleeping bag, you’re fine. Summer is a different matter. I won’t camp when there are insects chewing on me. They make mincemeat of me.
There’s no feeling like waking up in the woods after spending the night in a tent—or in the open air in a sleeping bag. The smell of pine trees is wonderful. Strong camp coffee is the tastiest. Winter camping is the best, especially in the mountains—the higher the elevation the better.
It’s been a while since the gals have rolled out the swimwear. How about some pool/beach adventures, Greg. Plentyof room for hunky guy episodes and gags too. (I imagine all the ladies are anticipating Jack in speedos?)
Never forget the brave protesters that stopped the Vietnam conflict but now days the kids only look at their phones. Wars stop when people refuse to be soldiers.
Lets remember today, we had a chance to visit our military nephew on this vacation, and thank him for his service. On Luann typical summer break palavar. What it portends remains to be seen, so I will remain to see. -:) -:)
I suspect we can count Bernice out. Camping has no appeal to her, since you can’t boss nature around. The foxes and snakes aren’t going to care, no matter how many infractions she writes them up for.
Luann is definitely a city girl. She doesn’t do dirty except her room. I tented in my youth and t was fun. In my old age, I must decline tenting and go to motels where there are real beds. I can’t get up from ground level without support and the air mattress doesn’t support my body. In my early youth, I did not need air mattress then in my mid-30s, I required them and now I reject them. Luann ought to experience real camping – as in sleeping in a tent on the ground and cook her meals in the fireplace – once in her life.
My one experience with camping (up in the Sierra Nevadas) was with a cousin and a friend of his, and their idea of camping was to get up at sunrise, eat a quick breakfast and pack a lunch and then go hiking in roughly thigh deep snow until we got back about dark, then eat and maybe go for a night hike. The third morning (when they suggested the day’s trip should be to a location “only” 10 miles away on a mostly uphill trail), I locked myself in the car with the keys and told them when they were ready to leave I’d unlock the doors. I imagined four days of communing with nature-not four days of forced marches. It’s been almost 35 years, and I’ve never gone camping again.

For too many of our soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines, a patch of dirt serves as their final resting place. Never forget.

Something tells me neither Luann nor Bernice have go to the great outdoors in neither a tent nor a cabin (or even an RV).

I think it would be a great experience for the girls to “rough it” for a couple of weeks!

As Kathy Lee Gifford once said “My idea of roughing it is a hotel with no room service”. I think Lu and Bern would agree :-)

This would be great! And doing it with Dez might actually mean that they’d get something out of it besides bugbites.

As far as I can tell, the point of camping is to show why we invented civilization. Ask Calvin about it.

Wow, so Luann’s whole thing about “I need to work two jobs this summer just to pay my insurance” got quietly forgotten, huh?

I’m with Bernice. My idea of “roughing it” is staying at a Motel 6 in Hollywood, so for me, it would be “HARD PASS, Dez!”

And over at 9 Chickweed Lane we see how Edda and Amos are going to spend their summer vacation. I think that’s a lot better than camping.
