The sad thing about this plastic situation is that its mostly the government’s fault for plastic in the oceans. I’ve never thrown trash in the ocean, coastal government trash barges do it on a daily basis.
Thank you Chip, for bringing attention to this issue. Plastic in the ocean is killing sea animals. I just saw a show last week and it was so sad to see what humans have done to the oceans.
I’m old enough to remember when the stores made us switch from paper bags which most people liked to plastic. We were told it was to save the forests. I think that was the first world “crisis” that became popular. I’ve become skeptical of subsequent world crises.
I read recently that paper bags had a bigger carbon footprint than plastic bags. The same article mentioned an experiment where they took some “biodegradable” bags and buried them in the ground for three years. When they dug them up again, they had not decomposed at all and could still be used to carry groceries.
I use the flimsy plastic bags when walking the dogs, if you catch my drift. They go in the garbage and end up in the landfill. If they’re damaged before hand such that I would get my hands dirty from the dog walk, I tie them in a single knot and recycle them at the grocery store instead, but I could easily put them in the garbage as well if plastics recycling is only a myth.
I used to bring my own canvas bags to the grocery store. Some clerks would see the bags and still put my stuff in plastic as though they got paid by how many plastic bags they could get rid of.
Neither paper or plastic here. We bring our own permanent canvas shopping bags. When I lived closer to the supermarket, walking with backpacks was ideal.

Thanks for bringing attention to plastics as killers.

The stores around my area need to get the paper bags with handles, so you can actually use them as easily as the plastic bags.

I get the whole plastics in the ocean thing, but it is still hard to be sympathetic towards a shark.
Canvas tote bags work for us.

I haven’t had a store ask paper or plastic in many, many a year.

I reuse my daughter’s bags for our garbage cans and use my canvas bags for shopping.

And then there is Starbucks. Wrap your paper straw in plastic. I am not picking on their overpriced coffee and snacks, just their straws.

Another “very special episode” of Overboard, in case we don’t get enough preachy politics from other sources.

My city banned plastic bags years ago. At first it was hard to get used to, but reusables I bring from home come natural now.

I, too, take my own reusable bags as much as possible. Every little bit helps, right?
Happy Sunday, Crew.
