People have ears for directional hearing mainly, but it also has the positive benefit of giving you a wider range of sound and better sound quality. Ears offer a bit of cushion because the sounds are divided between the ears, and this makes it possible to tolerate louder noises, like when your mother is yelling at you about why you think people have ears.
Good observation! Every part of your anatomy has a reason for being there. Some were important in the evolutionary past and now have lost their importance.
At the time the comic was written, mothers could still go with their initial frustrated yelling. After venting, we would come a practical solution. About the 5th time I drove to school to get my son, took him across town to get his broken glasses fixed, then back to school, I found my solution. We found a closer place to purchase glasses and they came with a year’s warranty. Sometimes I just did a delivery service with no fitting for him. Now parents can’t let that initial frustration show.
Why do parents expect children of that age to be responsible? I remember my cousin who needed glasses at the age of 4. Poor kid had these huge glasses on that little face and, as you can expect, they were forever getting lost or broken. Give the kid a break.
I agree that the glasses should have been left at home. It’s not like she was doing a lot of reading or other “eye” work; she was swimming. When I got glasses at age 10, my father, who also wore glasses, carefully instructed me on how to clean them without scratching them, to always leave them “face-up” on the dining room cabinet, etc. I was proud to be like my daddy and take good care of my glasses. (Mom didn’t wear glasses yet, but she kept an eye on mine, so to speak). But I did leave them off and at home anytime I was outside. (Or in my desk when I was at school and went out for recess.) When I got older, I would sometimes misplace them around the house, but I would shout to my siblings that the kid who found them would receive a quarter! A quarter was lots of money way back then – worth 2 candy bars and a nickel’s change! Again, I left them home when I rode horseback, went swimming or hiking etc. I would have been mortified if I had lost or damaged them and my parents had to buy new ones. But I still feel sorry for poor Lizzy, who is just a kid who made a mistake (albeit a pricey one).

By the way, where is her backpack?

If this was the real world, Elly would be long dead by now with all that screaming she dies. No human being can have Elly’s blood pressure and live.

But Elly, she was actually wearing her glasses; maybe they’re in the lake.

Glasses are expensive. And without a back up Elizabeth is now blind in many ways.

As someone who wears eyeglasses. I always thought that that was the nose’s job? How else can you do nasal push ups?

Currently working through the archive, I think I read this strip in it’s original black and white about a week ago.

Maybe so they can listen to their Mom scream at them about something that can’t be helped.

Lizzie’s lost glasses wouldn’t make mom scream if the budget wasn’t already busted by daddy’s needing toy trains.
