Did anyone besides me feel a twinge of horror at that last panel?
Maybe it comes from my reading of Stephen King and a particular device he used over and over in his earlier books… less so in later ones… that when he needed to goose up the anxiety quotient he’d put a child character in mortal peril. For years the kid always escaped undamaged, but at some point, as in Cujo and Pet Sematary they were no longer safe at all.
I couldn’t detach my reading from my knowledge that awful things happen to real kids in the real world, so some of the dread I felt reading those books was rooted in real world anxiety.
But Pee Wee. All alone, smiling, oblivious of any danger. And in Nancy he’s safe, of course. But the dread still kicks in for me when I think of what could happen through accident or malevolence.
