Actually, the IRS mostly audits people in the mid to low income range: They’re much less expensive audits because it doesn’t take an expert, and it can go pretty quickly. They avoid auditing folks whose taxes are complex because it takes longer and they have to use more senior people. The hardly ever audit people who bring accountants and lawyers.
(Yes, I have this from sources that I find credible… and found credible even before I read this.)
I seem to recall Enron would create a dummy corporation and sell parts of the company to the dummy corporation, which would allow it to a) get those parts off the budget; and b) claim the sales as revenue, thus fraudulently improving their bottom line. When I heard about it, my first thought was to recall that’s a trick the New York State government has used to balance its annual budget, e.g., when the state “sold” Attica Prison to the Urban Development Corporation (a state authority) for $200 million.
Enron executives went to jail for things like that. Mario Cuomo, governor at the time of the “sale,” got reelected.
What’s with the Vatican?!? Nothing to do with this strip, of course, but more misuse of funds, isn’t it? . . .Donna Leon’s Guido Brunetti should be put on the case. . . ;)
My wife starts her job as a Tax Auditor for Oregon next Monday. Seven years for aiding and abetting tax evasion for the rich, she moves to the side of light.
Imagine what this country would be like if everyone paid their fair share of taxes and the money was then only spent on things that improved and maintained a good society?
The government is above the law it imposes. That is why it is the government. I makes the rules and adjusts them to get its own way. We can only do that with our own kids.
We’ve got people in Australia who are told they owe the Tax Department funds they never thought, and have to prove to THE DEPARTMENT that they don’t!! Go figure …
Worked for IRS training facility once. They had a crazy woman in charge of the academy, made sense tho’. Hard to work there due to her rants, but other staffers and trainers were awesome tho!

You can avoid jail time by giving them all your money plus an arm and a leg.

The very rich are too busy to be bothered by the IRS. They have professionals to handle that.
