Most of our local media is now owned by just a handful of corporations. I think our democracy would be stronger if there was more locally controlled media.
The opinion section was the most important part of the local papers as it was separated from the news and let you know how some of your neighbors felt about things. You don’t get that with social media that try to focus on your “likes”.
Christian Science Monitor ran a six page article in its 9/30 edition of how local newspapers are trying to stay alive. Lotta spunk. . .how to stop the conglomerates buying up and shutting down is a REAL problem.
The loss of papers also means the loss of history. Clippings, for example. That story about your uncle, or the high school graduation, or many more memories. Our paper stopped printing letters to the “Editor” and told the readers to use their Faceboob page instead, if you choose to lose your privacy, and also not be read by those who don’t use FB. And like others have said, all the paper’s writers live somewhere far away.
Occasionally, the local paper has some local news in it. Mostly copies from the internet. You see stuff go on in town and haven’t a clue because the paper isn’t interested in printing it.
I buy the Tampa Bay Times from a machine for $1.00 4x weekly. I don’t subscribe, since I live in Orlando part-time. The paper seems much thinner than 15 yrs ago…and has eliminated Non Sequitur (!) and Doonesbury (!!!) from their daily comics page but I will support it as long as they reprint NYTimes and “WAPO” columns. I feel the rise of the Confederacy around me – but I can’t afford Miami…LOL!
I used to like the daily news paper delivery but after all the warnings that news papers laying on the front porch told burglars that yo weren’t home and buying one and then not being able to just throw it away, as well as the dozens of bits of ads and unwanted pieces of paper falling out of it, I just went with the internet. Thus, this.
I’m glad Trudeau is advocating for the local paper without insisting that it be in paper form. The iPad or laptop will show an actual replica of the paper version if you subscribe to it.
We have always subscribed to our local newspaper for local news and local events. But now they have made getting a physical paper so expensive we have canceled. My wife, with a laptop can get it in newspaper form, but I with an ipad have to wade through pop up ads that ruin the whole experience
I went up to a young woman recently who was reading a newspaper and said, “Your generation doesn’t read print newspapers!” and she smiled and said, “I’m being nostalgic.”
I used to be a devoted reader of the local paper… Kansas City Star. Quit a few years back. The person that delivered the morning paper was unreliable. I had to call 2 or 3 times a week about not getting the paper. Sometimes it was worse then that…

The newspapers follow the Twitter accounts of the town board.

Newspapers are still needed and still provide a vital function.

Do they still live in suburban Seattle? The Reporter series of neighborhood newspapers aren’t a great substitute to the King County Journal.

Speaking of media, it should be interesting this week to see the impeachment hearings begin on tv on Wednesday.

In the Nordic democracies the government subsidizes local newspapers. Guess why?
