Caulfield is demonstrating the costume by climbing the book shelves. That might get him a visit with the ogre in the main office.

I am woefully behind the times when it comes to popular culture. I guess I’ve finally crossed the line from “hip oldster” to “ancient geezer.” :’(

There is a popular documentary called “Free Solo” about rock climbing. The climber being documented is Alex Honnold and Caulfield is dressed like Alex. Caulfield climbing on the bookshelf shows that he is in character – climbing.

a-HEM! I submit that Jef, in his attempt to be obtuse, left too many ambiguities yesterday. By the preponderance of clues (not the least of which is that Caulfield is a Black character in a comic strip) I contend that the British mockumentary #HoodDocumentary (something else Mrs. Olsen would never have seen) would have been the better answer: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5787650/

The main character’s name is Roll Safe, whose aphorisms have become a meme, and rival Poor Richard’s, if Richard had been Straight Out of Compton: https://www.vibe.com/photos/roll-safe-memes

It turns out that the discriminating clue is Frazz’s costume (scale-pattern shirt & masking-tape-on-broom trident), a reference to Neptune Mountaineering, a climbing supplies outfit in Denver.

It’s kind of meta that the characters seem aware that they are in a perpetual one year time loop, at least when Halloween comes around.

Having seen and enjoyed Free Solo, I can’t say that I remember anything about his pants legs. And I’d never have made that guess from these two strips. I’m withholding judgement on this one.

I saw yesterday’s strip before seeing the Solo preview, so I did notice the frayed pantlegs.

Not to make it too easy to guess, but I’ve watched that documentary three times all the way through now, and God knows how many parts at a time, and I’ve read the book (less known but I think extremely good) that, while it’s not an official companion book, follows it the documentary’s them and events closely with remarkably little overlap and standing very well on its own. And still, for the life of me, I cannot figure out why he did that to his pants.

I mean, the whole thing is just one Why? after another, but the Why? about his shredded pants never fades away.
