What if Nelson had been washing the dog, eh? Last thing he touched would be the dog in the cleanest possible condition. Shouldn’t have to wash his hands in that case, right?
I use basically the same reasoning to explain why I don’t think you need to launder bath towels.
When I was Nelson’s age the dog’s back was just at hand level. I’d wash my hands, pet the dog, and be told I had “dog hands” and have to wash them again. The only bathroom was upstairs; sometimes I’d go up and down several times per meal. Finally learned to fold my hands in front of me so I’d be “ready to say Grace” when I got to the table.
“Ugh! I’ve been kissed by a dog! I have dog germs! Get hot water! Get some disinfectant! Get some iodine!”—Lucy, after being licked by Snoopy in A Charlie Brown Christmas
the grandma in me would have given him a pass on the handwashing and corrected his manners. If some one asks if you want something , you say “yes please” or “no thank you”
Actually it was first published 22 Jan 1967 – I was in college then. https://www.gocomics.com/peanuts/1967/01/22 even has an extra panel that GoComics usually leaves out of all the Sunday comics now. So they format vertical better I guess.

To this day, I always do as I’m told. I guess that’s why I turned out the way I did and why I was brought up that way.

Reminds me of Sally and Snoopy. “Touched the dog? TOUCHED THE DOG?”

Darn it I hate when I agree with Opal ! Hand washing before a meal is a good idea. No reason just do it ! ;-)

Likely more germs on the bathroom door knob/lever than on Roscoe!

Poor Roscoe, he is such a lovely dog, too bad she just can’t see it.

One does not show offense when one expects dinner-table meat handouts.

Lucky for you that humans like to have filthy animals in their house.

That’s why I whisper so the dog can’t hear what I’m saying, after all she’s my best friend.

Truth is the best defense.
(if that fails there is always the djt method.)
