Theologically speaking, there are parallels. “Perfect” contrition means you are sorry because something you did was morally wrong. “Imperfect” contrition means you are sorry because of the punishment it deserves.
The second panel has theological implications. Do you practice your religion solely for the purpose of “eternal reward” for yourself?
I used to be an Air Force pilot. It sounds like a glamorous job, but the hours are long, family separation is a way of life, they send you to places like Korea where you sweat your butt off in the winter and the Philippines where you sweat your butt off any time of year. They send you places where people don’t like you and shoot at you.
For all this, there was extra money in the pay check at the end of the month. We used to say with great sarcasm when in an uncomfortable situation, “All this and flight pay too!”
The money was not worth the aggravation. The reason pilots flew is because pilots LOVE to fly.
I carried this philosophy over into my civilian career too. There are some jobs you cannot pay me enough to do (elementary school teacher, policeman, nurse, day care worker to name a few – I am glad there are people who want to do these jobs). I’ve always liked what I did for a living therefore, I got good at what I did and a living wage was a consequence.
If you don’t love living your religion, I think you are missing the point. It is all about the journey; not the destination. According to my religion (anyone remember the Baltimore Catechism?) God made us to be happy with him – on Earth as it is in Heaven.
