Mimi isn’t biased, she loves everybody, even monsters…Pasqual should get her to talk to his monsters under the bed and the monster family in the bathtub drain, then they’d leave him alone.
My daughter used to be like Mimi. She loved to hug, and loved getting hugs. About the time she was mid-way through Jr. High, one of her ‘friends’ told her that it was “perverted” for her to let a male hug her – even her dad – especially her dad – unless she intended to have sex with them. That night she refused to hug me, or even accept a hug.
That change remained until about a year ago, when she was 39. I am sure that the girl who told her that was repeating something that probably was said to her by her own father – who doubtless thought he just was going to keep her from being abused. The psychologic damage done by thoughtless, uninformed, or extremist comments made to or around children and youth is incalculable.
She has shared with me that it took a (female) psychologist over a year to reassure her that there is nothing ‘skeevy’ about accepting a hug … or offering one. The psychologist made no headway until she asked my daughter “Are you going to continue to let such a comment – however well intended – put the brakes on your own judgement and enjoyment of life? You will tell me that either you will give up making your own decisions … or that you are unable to?” My daughter is fiercely independent, and that challenge finally broke through the mold of that habitual rejection of physical touch.
The day she offered me that first hug in many years, I accepted it, smiled, and said “Welcome back.” Her grin was enormous, and her laugh was delightful.
