She is pretty smart. I remember how she fooled Caufield into completing his summer reading list early, even though she was already in league with Mrs. Olsen.
Y’know “bait” works in all kinds of endeavors other than fishing. Just like “loss leader” has nothing at all to do with fishing despite that “leader” occurs in both.
Drilling holes in three foot thick ice. Wind blowing hard enough to move the truck on the ice. Freezing your tail off for a bucket of Smelt. Whats not to like?
Because marathon running, swimming, and biking are the only human endeavors worthy of our time, and people who choose not to engage in them are worthless blobs of protoplasm who just get in the way of the good people.
It’s been a while since I’ve done a spring marathon, or a marathon at all, but I remember those winter long runs well. Thanks to the passage of time, I’m sure I remember them more fondly than I did when they were fresher in my mind and less edited and curated. But they could be harsh. I remember the frozen digits (and, worse, the re-warming of those digits), the long earlobe icicles, the frosted-up eyelashes, the fogged-up sunglasses. The dehydration thanks to water bottles being frozen solid. And the dicey, slippery footing.
And thinking, well, at least I’m not sitting still. At least I’m not ice fishing.
It occurs to me I need to remember those runs better, to remember just how tough they were and just how cold I got, and the fact that I survived them anyway, and use those memories to enhance the ongoing and perhaps endless effort to get better at cold-water swims. Someday I want ice fishermen to say, “At least I’m not that nut.”

You have to recognize it if you’re going to cut it, Caulfield.

You need better bait to catch that fish, Caulfield.

She wouldn’t let him hold her up for a long philosophical chat.

From my experience, ice fishing can’t be done without beer and a cribbage board.

After having spent over 7 decades in Wisconsin, I’m still not ashamed to call myself a dedicated indoorsman. Winter is for masochists.
