DirecTV is under orders to remove a satellite from orbit because they reported a possible threat of the batteries swelling and exploding.(Just like cell phones and hoverboards. LOL)
They’re(NASA, I believe) aren’t so much worried about us. They’re concerned about what might happen to the gazillion other satellites in orbit.
And all it would take is one super-solar flare to cause planetary disaster. That and global pandemic are two of the greatest scientific concerns. Well, those and billions of freezers suddenly having all the ice cream melt.
The possible explosion of the DirectTV satellite is a threat to the whole world, due to the probable damage to the GPS satellites. The loss of the timing signals would disrupt almost every thing we rely on now.
If they are using lithium batteries that is the problem. They over heat and explode from over use since they have a tendency to have no fail safes to the power supply to limit stress on the batteries.

One thing I liked about summer camp was the starry nights. You don’t see a lot of those in civilization.
