We have hordes of Canada geese, and assorted allegedly migratory ducks, and even some swans, all of which moved into the area and never left. Some people think they’re cute, especially the swans. Swans are the most vicious birds I’ve ever seen. They are highly territorial and will try to hurt you if you go near their territory. Blackbirds, mockingbirds, jays, and crows are at least as territorial, but aren’t nearly as big and will stop chasing you if you get beyond their territory. Swans will continue to chase, and will put you on their Enemies List.
we have an over abundance of “residential” geese now, the Canadian geese that no longer migrate. It is a big messy problem. The goslings are as cute as can be and the birds are majestic BUT allowing them to over populate is not good for anyone, not even the birds themselves.
Yesterday I saw a flock of about 150 Canada geese chowing down on a local church’s lawn. Must have been some special grass, as they were packed wing-to-wing.
We have a “goose light” in our complex pond, to keep them from staying here. It blinks all night. Apparently geese don’t have eyelids, so it disrupts their sleep. Works pretty well! We only have one nesting pair now. Others come and go of course, but not as much.
Very glad – my dog loves to eat goose poop! At 4” from the ground, it’s hard to react fast enough to prevent him.
Ponds aren’t freezing like they used to around here so the Canada geese stay. The goose season goes from Oct 14 – Dec 18, but for some reason the bag limit is only 2 per day.
And for some reason DNR gets upset when you hunt around the subdivision retention ponds.
Stations in Antarctica TWICE had record breaking temperatures in the 60s (F’) in the last week and a half. The higher of the two, which was less than a degree below 70’F might not make the official record because the station is a rather new one and the set up was mounted slightly shorter than the usual there, but know that two such very unusual readings happened days apart.

Actually Geese stopped migrating decades ago and the main reason is people keep feeding them so they stay instead of migrating for food.
