Jean Shepherd (the country singer, not the man behind "A Christmas Story), had a song titled, “Poor Sweet Baby”. As a kid I thought she was being nice to him. As an adult I get more of a condescending feel.
It makes sense. Charlie Brown isn’t used to people showing him sympathy, which he often desperately craves. Also, yes, my thoughts immediately went to Snoopy: The Musical.

Let’s put it this way, Peppermint Patty. You’re not his type!

Life’s a b!tch in a manner of speaking, CB! :D

You’re probably better off with Snoopy, CB, even with his ‘dog-breath’ ….

All I wanted was someone who could put up with me. I found her.

It sounds like you would be looking for a mother more than a wife.

A guy can always count on his faithful dog companion. Snoopy may “smak” him, but in real life it’s more of a wet tongue in the ear thing.

My mother used to call me “pobrecito” when I was down or injured (and we’re not even Spanish). Same thing, but sounds cooler.

Getting married (and having babies!) is another one of those things one shouldn’t do just because “everybody” else does.

In the American South, “Poor sweet baby,” isn’t a loving thing to say. It’s just below, “Bless your heart” on the insult scale.

Like they always say, “If you want someone who’ll call you Poor, Sweet Baby, get a dog.”
They always say that.
