The Taliban booby traps roadways, houses, etc.. Even corpses are rigged to blow up. Here, our booby in chief traps us with lies, self deluded fantasy, and self adoration. I think it’s now safer to be in Afghanistan.
It is incredible what jobs suddenly became dangerous. I feel for all of them. But, I think about grocery store workers. Usually, very low pay and exposure to a very large number of people daily. There are other jobs like that but grocery store workers quickly come to mind. They deserve a raise.
We are in a society where those who do the most good for society are paid the worst. Not that I don’t think athletes and actors and musicians perform an important function, but so do grocery store clerks and food service staff. A little equity could go a long way in a society.
After ‘Nam, found rescuing folks off cliffs, white water rescues, EMT work, ski patrol, wild land firefighting, calming and the best medicine for my PTSD. For those who work in these sectors, it’s just “the job”. When courage is just part of the job, it is a bit of “social separation” from the madding crowd.
And people wonder why retail/grocery workers hate the holidays more than average. Now this. Even in smaller communities dealing with people these days will take a lot more out of you. No, we do not get paid enough even with temporary wage increases. We do it because we work as teams and really do like most people and will go out of our way to help you. We cannot work miracles all the time. Just please don’t be a jerk or be a cutesy pie. And do not bring your friends and family in to shop with you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. And please show a crap ton of respect for nurses by just shutting up and doing what they tell you with a “Yes, I will/won’t. And Thank You.”
