I’m not sure how dangerous the self-retracting leashes are, but they are definitely a hindrance to training. The goal is usually “loose leash” where they just walk nicely beside you, and the leash just hangs there. (One could go so far as to say it is hanging “loosely.”) But the self-retracting style puts constant, albeit small, tension on the collar, and the dog alway feels a bit of a tug.
If he was using a retractable lead, she was right, although quite stupid in her expression of it. Retractable leads teach dogs to pull, which in the case of Caulfield and a Standard Poodle, could be quite dangerous.Of course, Caulfield’s smart enough that he probably keeps even a Standard Poodle flummoxed.
We have been having issues in my neighborhood with runners not practicing social distancing. I was walking my two pitbull mixes on retractables and my great dane pittie mix was lagging behind checking the P-mail. a runner came up from behind with no warning and when she passed in the street she yelled “your leash isn’t working” I responded that it was working perfectly at keeping you more than six feet away.

Another driver paying attention to something that had nothing to do with driving. Probably had a cell phone in one hand.

Retractable leashes are a huge hazard to cyclists.

I wonder if it’s a coincidence that the cord on the vacuum cleaner could also be retractable?

No comments on the spring loaded leash? They do bring your dog to an abrupt halt. I see their point.

Since when did Caulfield have a dog?
