Maybe Calvin has a fear of adopting his Dad’s way of thinking someday.
Vacation can be a dirty job, but somebody’s got to do it. We’ve all got to go sometime.
This will be my final posting before leaving on “vacation” tomorrow (assuming that I don’t have second thoughts after reading today’s strip). I expect to return after Easter as a part-time contributor, because I will be taking on an additional pursuit at that time. But I want to answer some of your questions before I go:
Yesterday, Thirdguy in Vermont correctly guessed that I am male, before he incorrectly guessed that I am female. I was really hoping he would change his mind one more time….
As I’ve said in the past, Mythreesons in Oklahoma incorrectly guessed that I’m Bill Watterson (more than once, if my memory serves me…). Please don’t tell her that I’m taking a sabbatical just like Bill Watterson did. I promise not to post reruns of my comments while I’m away. :>)
Yesterday, Thirdguy, still in Vermont as far as I know, incorrectly guessed that I am a man of the cloth, but at least this provided inspiration for some “Hobbes” jokes. Nevertheless, I do have an important calling, as all of us do.
Yesterday, cdward, located who-knows-where, implied that I might be a better person than him, but I definitely have to disagree. In reality, we all fall so far short of the standard of perfection, that most of our attempts to compare ourselves to others seem….. well……. what’s the right word in the context of Calvin and Hobbes……… laughable?
Thanks for all of the humor, constructive comments, encouragement, and stimulating discussions over the past four months. You really are a unique group of people who are both insightful and a lot of fun.
I hope that this spring will be a time of renewal, new life, and discovery for all of us (unless you live in Australia and you have to wait 6 months). It’s also a very good time to get out and cultivate new relationships, as well as improve existing ones – of the non-cyberspace kind. When talking with your friends, try hard to avoid the temptation to multiplex by secretly checking Calvin and Hobbes – so that you don’t accidentally laugh at the wrong times.
Have a great spring everyone, find ways to spark your imagination and creativity (within legal limits), seek to focus on the things that are truly important in life, and never lose your sense of humor.
Finally one more question: Am I, or am I not, the real Hobbes? Well……… My answer is that if you enjoy asking the question, then I leave that to your imagination.
Hobbs, thank you for your “farewell” letter to all of us who have grown to consider you as a friend and fellow comics lover.
You always were interesting and fun. I will miss your humor and your insight.
Besides that, you were very helpful and willing to share your computer knowledge with those of us who are just kind of stumbling along as we go. Thank you.
As to whether you are the “real” Hobbs, well either way, at the very least you do have his spirit and wit.
We will look for you and hope to see you back in the fold soon.
Dad is rationalizing those miserable “vacations” they always build character on…
“Hobbes” sounds like a smart enlightened individual. I knew a gentleman like that, he was in academia and everyone who knew him said he was a class act.
When Hobbes first began posting, I thought he was Bill Watterson, but it soon came to me that Watterson needs few words to get his point across, and would not be likely to expound as Hobbes does. Nonetheless, I have enjoyed reading Hobbes philosophical essays, and the interesting comments they often elicit. I don’t often post, but I enjoy reading everyone’s thoughts and witticisms. Thanks for being here. Have a good sabbatical, Hobbes. You’ll be missed.
@Hobbes: I agree with puppybreath, who commented: “As to whether you are the ‘real’ Hobbes, well either way, at the very least you do have his spirit and wit.” And with harrietbe, who said, ”Thanks for being here. Have a good sabbatical, Hobbes. You’ll be missed.”

So long, farewell, Auf Weiderersehen, good bye!! :) Have a great time off, and most of us will miss you!! (I can’t speak for everyone obviously) :)
Calvin, I know that I’m “adopted”, but still look just like my dad and act just like him too… most people don’t believe me when I say that I’m adopted… sigh ;-)
Hobbes,
I have enjoyed your posts and will miss them. It is interesting to observe the different takes on this strip. Your insight has always been of high caliber and (I think) right on!
I suspect that I have a little too much Calvin in me in that I believe staying out of trouble is no fun and is definitely boring. Trouble should exclude things like divorce, jail, broken bones and lost friends. I can and do embarass my wife and children. I also believe laughter is the very best medicine and prescription for a happy life (no matter how long).
Calvin is definitely the child of his parents: he gets his Dad’s philosophical nonsense and his enjoyment of misery (however, he likes his misery in shorter doses, like while sledding down suicide hills), and his Mom’s suspension of disbelief (like when she called out to find Hobbes when he was lost outside). And ties them together with his own brand of self-centeredness.
Tell me Im adopted ok
You say my sisters name is Oprah or something like.
Oh no you say my fathers name, got a funny sounding name that sound like gadoofy or gahdafy .
Till you find out I will stay put.
Hobbes, may your Lenten season be blessed. I know for a tiger such as yourself giving up comics will be hard but not as hard as giving up meat on Fridays. =)
And if you are adopted, are you going to ask that you be taken back and be exchanged? You could do worse. Mom and Dad probably wouldn’t, but you might. You might even be FROM worse.
The Noodle (ha ha ha he he!) Incident (ha ha ha ha!)–that was a sight! (Oh ho ho ho!) You should have been there! (ha ha ha!) It was funny beyond belief–he he he ha ha!–except for Calvin, of course–ha he he ha!–and his Mom and Dad (ho ho he he ha ha!)…
By Dads “logic”, they really should be taking vacations to some of the extremely hellish parts of the world, to realize how great they have it.
Camping in the rain and having to catch and cook one’s fish would be heaven to many on this planet.
HOBBES:::: I expect a very profound posting from you on April 25. In the meantime, I will miss your deep thoughts, and the fun of really believing you are who I want you to be. Isn’t that what “faith” is?
What kid Calvin’s age doesn’t wish with all their hearts that they were adopted … or that maybe, somehow, there was just a mix-up at the hospital and that they really belong somewhere else to someone else?!? I know I certainly did!!!!!
Thanks Hobbes, I am sure there are heaps of people who read but don’t post (me being one) who get alot of pleasure out of reading the comments here from everyone.
I have much enjoyed your posts and look forward to your return.
I too am adopted as is my sister who is three and a half months younger than I am (not blood related of course). We had a very good childhood and now at 66 we are close. Not in distance, she in Northern Calif. and me in South Florida, but in emotion.
I’m moving from this neighborhood after long-time residents(I assume) very pointedly moved because some of us newcomers probably are not acceptable to them. So, like the job in the song-take this comment section and………..
I agree with Calvin’s Dad. I just came back from a month in a tropical paradise, and two weeks later, I’m still not very happy about where I live. Now I have to wait another year before I go back. At least spring is in the air and the sun is noticeably warmer, and melting the snow, even though it’s still below 0 degrees Celcius most of the time. Summer here is beautiful so hopefully I’ll forget what I experienced until the the next solstice around Christmas.
