I can still remember most of what I learned in school. One thing I would have to relearn is geography. When I studied it, many countries had Dutch, French, British or Belgian in front of their names.
At one point, I made the wallpaper on my computer a map of Africa and at another time, the Balkans. Both have changes significantly since I first learned about them. I also made a special study of the “Stans” that used to be part of the Soviet Union. At least now, I can “place” a country in my mind when I hear about it on the news.
Gonna be a lot of new revelations. Parents will find how little they remember from their school days. Children will come to see that their parents, once the source of all knowledge, might just need a little tune-up. I know I would and my guys are now middle-aged.
High school geometry was not easy for me. Three of us in the back of a crowded classroom used to share ideas on homework. In my yearbook, one of them wrote “thank you for letting me cheat in geometry, if it wasn’t for you I wouldn’t have gotten a C . I would have gotten an A !!”
And to think, so many of these parents were the ones that thought teaching was easy and they could do a better job at it than professional educators. Looks a bit different now doesn’t it, and you only have to deal with a few kids, imagine 30+ in a classroom.
I sure did miss out as a kid… my folks never did my homework or even helped much. They did get an encyclopedia set for us kids and a library card for me and then pointed me in that direction.
I’m not sure if they were much involved in finding the solution to my failing grades in elementary school. It turned out I was (and still am) extremely nearsighted. They did get me the glasses I needed when the school figured out that was the problem. And my grades gradually got much better after that. I was pretty much an A student by the time I made it to junior high school… still using those encyclopedias and that library card. Good stuff.

An education is what you have left after all the facts are gone.

Many parents will find a new appreciation of teachers as this school year moves along.

Gotta worry about Mom’s study ethic.
