I caught chicken pox in 1st grade from my first crush. Crushie was absent, so since I was near-sighted my teacher told me I could sit in that desk. Bliss! Until I caught it. Crushie actually called me to apologise for getting me sick. Swoon

This is a funny strip, but being re-run now is ill-timed. His prank seems much more mean spirited, given what he may now be contagious with.

That was the norm in the 50s & 60s. Go and get everyone sick. Build up the immunity.

This reminds me of covid

Hey, if Susie hadn’t already gotten them, it’s better she gets them while she’s a kid and during the summertime, so she doesn’t miss school, and also if you get chicken pox as an adult it’s much worse. Didn’t Calvin’s Mom consider that?

Well, Watterson always said Suzie was based on his wife…

I think by the time there’s spots contagion is over-he’s already spread the "pox’ all over the school!

Spooky timing for this arc….

Susie is so sweet. And Calvin is becoming less and less funny.

When I was a kid in the ’50’s Mothers would have chicken Pox parties so we would all become immune.

When mom’s friend’s kids got chicken pops, mom invited them over to give it to us, since it was summer time (and polio was a thing, so we weren’t allowed to congregate at the community pool, which basically meant we were stuck at home). Same for measles. She tried to keep us away from the mumps, but it didn’t work.
