Yes, we played a lot of tether ball as kids. It was fine. Taller kids had an advantage, but we shorter kids worked out our strategies and could pull off victories.
I hope the new tether ball has a softer rope or something instead of a chain. I loved it when I was a kid but have suffered the injuries that came with playing it as mentioned here.
Years ago I made a comment to my mother asking her if she still had the tea ball (it was always in a drawer, but never used). For some reason the woman at first thought I meant tether ball and the T-ball. The tea infuser shaped like a ball that was always called a tea ball never once dawned on her! Meanwhile I was impressed she knew what tether ball was even if she got the name wrong.
Way back in grade school, we had a tether ball on the playground. One fine spring day when it was muddy and I had worn my white dress to school, I played tether ball and fell in the mud. Never got that dress clean even though my grandma bleached it.
When I was 10 we moved into a house that had a tetherball in the back yard – my brother, then 11, and I LOVED it. It was like we were given permission to attempt to murder each other whenever we pleased, as long as we used that tetherball!
No one actually got hurt, but I almost got the rope around his neck and the pole at the same time! Mama was NOT amused…
It’s not like we actually hated each other, nor did we actively attempt grievous bodily harm in any way that had a reasonable chance of working, but that tetherball gave us opportunities to work out aggression in a fun, active, out-of-the-house way.
Gym was the one class I hated in school – and did not do well in. Summer on the other hand was the worst time of year to me – no school. Once in college I worked my schedule I went to school summers also. Between that and coming into college with credits from classes when I was high school I managed to graduate in 3 years while working 3 part jobs during the year. That was my peak – it has been downhill since then and I did not even finish law school which I went to at night while working full time as an accountant during the day.
Had a kid intentionally hit it the wrong way just so the ball would clock me in the back of the head. Then he got it past me on the rebound (I was facing the opposite way to try and block his shot).

I never got the point of that “game”, or if there were any rules.

Tether-ball can be a lonely sport. It’s one of the few sports designed so you can defeat and humiliate yourself, all by yourself, publicly.

It’s not what you say that makes it exciting. It’s how you say it.
