I remember walking behind a waiter into a room that seemed very large because of the full mirror on the far end⊠and wondering who that chubby balding guy was, who was walking toward us. The realization nearly knocked me over.
I remember notice my dadâs military paperwork back in the days, one item caught my attention was his weight which major different to his much older weight, I could not imagine him with the weight back in military time, my dad was much several pounds lighter.
I have a copy of an old âPicklesâ cartoon on my fridge. They are seated at the counter in a diner, and Earl looks across and says something along the lines of âLook at that old couple down there. Do you think weâll ever look like that?â
To which Opal replies, âThatâs a mirror. And thatâs us.â
I used to work as a model. I had a copy of my favorite photo of me enlarged huge and framed on my wall for years. I was going out with a guy, first date, and he came to pick me up. He walked in and immediately flipped out over the photo. It went like this:
Him: Wow, who is that, sheâs gorgeous!!Me: (Standing by the photo.) Donât you see a resemblance?Him: Oh, yeah, you do sort of look alike. Is that your sister?Me: No, Itâs me.Him: Oh, thatâs you? (Long pause.) What happened?
In 7thb grate I did a family history report in school. I found a picture of my dad in his late teens and titled it âHe actually had hair.â It was the first picture I found where he did.
Iâve dealt with my weight all my life â and remember thinking that I was fat as a teenager. A few years ago, I found some pictures of myself around 15 or 16 â and I had 6 pack abs. Who knew?

Weâll see, Nelson, who gets the last laugh when Earlâs great-great-grandchildren ask you who that little, blond boy in the picture is.

My cousin recently remarked that I looked just like our grandfather. And not from his youthful pictures.

Earl, to get back at the little punk, tell him to go ask Opal âwhoâs the skinny woman the dark curly hair?â

When Earl used to say, âSomeday weâll look back on this and laughâ, he didnât have this kind of laughter in mind.

I try not to look in mirrors or have my image taken because of the equipment damage.
