People used to actually leave the city and go someplace cooler. Even poor people in the tenements would go to the Catskills for the summer. At one time, the Pope would vacate Rome and spend the summer in the other Papal residence in Avignon, France.
Well, it used to be covered with ice to a much larger extent, but that cooled the seas, so the atmosphere contained less water vapor, and that reduced the export of water from the seas to where the inland glaciers were, so they slowly went away, and their cooling effect on the atmosphere is causing atmospheric warming by its absence, and the lack of reflective cooling. The warming atmosphere will warm the sea and restore the glaciers in about ten to fifteen thousand years.
“Increasing demand for home air conditioning driven by global warming, population growth and rising incomes in developing countries could increase the planet’s temperatures an additional half a degree Celsius by the end of the century, according to a new report by the Rocky Mountain Institute.” A perfect example of positive feedback in a control system, ultimately leading to implosion. It’s getting hotter, so we turn up the AC. More AC makes it still hotter. Repeat, repeat, repeat . . . collapse in a puddle.
Having a deathly pale skin was once considered the height of fashion. (Still is, some places). People powdered their faces… Parasols helped keep you pale. Nowadays, most folks want to look tanned and toned. An entirely different aesthetic.
I don’t get it. I don’t read books I don’t like, watch TV shows or movies I think are stupid, listen to music I don’t like, or read comics I know I don’t like just so I can complain about them; nor do I consider it a useful expenditure of my time and energy to engage in the pursuit of things I know will upset me, for the sole purpose of informing others how objectionable the thing I intentionally sought out is. It’s not that hard to avoid things you don’t like. If you need to go out of your way to find things to be upset about, you don’t get to blame any one else when you find them.

I’d be in favor of umbrellas being a regular thing outdoors – and in WalMart. A six footer might force some people to be a little more considerate.

I’ve seen people use parasols. Especially in the parks and their gardens.

I don’t know this boy, but he seems fairly dim. I’m sure Calvin Head is delighted, and will tell Caulfield all about how dumb this kid is!
