The gang is going about it all wrong. Instead of saying “Charlie Brown got himself picked off second base”, they should be “Wait a minute. Charlie Brown got all the way to second base?”
A Scapegoat comes from the Bible, (Leviticus 16:21–16:22).
(21) Then Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over it all the iniquities of the people of Israel, and all their transgressions, all their sins, putting them on the head of the goat, and sending it away into the wilderness by means of someone designated for the task. (22) The goat shall bear on itself all their iniquities to a barren region; and the goat shall be set free in the wilderness.
So if Charlie Brown is the teams Scapegoat. What are the teams “iniquities”? For it seems that it is not about the Goat. But about everyone else.
Sometimes when you try to do two things at the same time, you don’t do either of them very well. Charlie was supposed to keep his eye out for his opportunity to lead off the bag, but not get caught by a tag. Instead, he led off and tried being manager with Snoopy at bat, but he didn’t notice the imminent tag.
Jonathan Frakes, the actor who played Riker on STNG, starred and directed an episode for the series. It’s one of the worst episodes in my recordings and I refuse to watch it. When I transferred the vhs to dvd I neglected to include that episode.
Some people like to think they can multitask, but in reality none of those tasks are done very well. Success requires focus on the task at hand, and that is what Charlie lacks right now.
Charlie Brown shouldn’t worry; it’s not as if Snoopy can’t hit more home runs next season, or (checks the date on the strip) the 25 seasons after that…oh, wait, I don’t think Snoopy ever hit another home run. For that matter, I don’t remember seeing Snoopy hitting any of his first 713.
I always thought Charles Schulz had such a low opinion of himself and then I remembered he was a church going Minnesotan and feeling good about yourself for any reason is thought of as sinful by that group of people.

GOAT didn’t stand for Greatest of All Time in the early 70s, but saying that Charlie is the greatest goat of all time sadly fits.
(I see no reason to call him Charlie Brown. How many Charlies are there in this strip?)

Linus asks a good question in the second panel. Given CB’s personality (or lack thereof), Freud would have a field day with that one.
