Mr. Watterson said in the 10th anniversary book (I think) that he stood in front of the mirror and made these faces to draw. I would’ve loved to see that.
Back in the stone age when you had to take the film to the store and get it developed, my brother made a face like Calvin’s first one. The rest of us were laughing until my dad realized what he did. I think he smacked my brother into next week! When the pictures came back, we were all looking at them and busted out laughing when we saw “THAT” picture. We thought my brother was going to get smacked into next week again, but instead my Dad, trying to keep a straight face, busted out laughing.
Calvin has a larger range of facial expressions than some actors I’ve seen. Perhaps a career in cinema? I mean really, he has the imagination and drama down pat.
I was trying to take a picture of twin grandsons with a 35mm camera one time and they kept making faces. The flash had a button to discharge it so I flashed it, they started grinning from ear to ear. Snap! Gotcha!
Watterson really needed to draw just one strip where a good photo of Calvin was taken without his knowledge, and his reaction afterward would have been classic.

kids’ll be kids (specially when they’re — oh, I don’t know — camera shy)

I have one of those. :P. He’s anything but shy, especially of cameras. He’s in his 30’s now, and is still about the same. :D

Like High School Harry just said, those of you without a profile picture, or those wanting a new one, there’s some great ones above.

We need more families with only one child, but fewer Calvins.

When this comic was printed before, Calvins nose was white in the fourth panel. Weird why its not.

Those cute faces can be touched up with new editing apps. But they represent the best of Bill Watterson’s creativity!
