The executioner seems to have shrunk a foot between panel 1 and panel 3!

Being executed while in the stocks? Seems excessively harsh. Will they chop his hands off as well?

Yeah. I remember reading Wizard of Id as a kid and being amused.

Jokes about capital punishment? Not so much.

It was common for the person to be beheaded to tip the executioner to hopefully ensure he does a good job and just not slice off the top of your head. Actually beheading was reserved for the upper class as if done right was painless; while the rabble were hanged which if done incorrectly often took 10 minutes for the person to die. The French guillotine was introduced as an egalitarian execution method for everyone.
