His name is usually Nick and her name is usually either Holly or Carol. And it helps if he has an adorable child or two, either from a previous marriage (preferably widowed) or nieces and nephews from a dead sibling.
I remember when Hallmark actually made good movies. I remember a Hall of Fame movie in the 90s about a flood, I think in the 1930s. A pregnant woman and an escaped convict floating down a river amidst the chaos. But now it’s all formulaic, sappy romances.
OH. MY GAWD. People: thanks for the comments. Haven’t EVER watched a Hallmark movie, and now I don’t have to. BTW, everybody here DOES know that the romance genre is, far and away, the biggest selling genre. I really think most romance novels should be in the FANTASY category. . .
It isn’t the plot of every Hallmark movie. The other plot is two people meet and take an instant disliking to each other. Naturally, over the course of three or so days they realize that not only do they like each other but that they’re soul-mates who are madly in love and will be forever.
Don’t forget: Best friend is always a minority as is the boss, mayor, and cafe owner. The small town main character will have a cute kid. There will be a town tree lighting ceremony. Everyone acts like hot chocolate and candy canes are the two tastiest things on the planet. The big city character will pass on a big promotion from the big city and may even decide to take over a failing family or friends small business. Everyone in town remembers the big city person. One of the two will overhear a conversation and misunderstand and want to call things off. And, lastly, they won’t kiss until the last 2 minutes of the movie. Did I miss anything?
…and WHY do they have to play Christmas movies almost all summer long? Those movies are so sappy. Hallmark has gone down the old toilet. It used to have good programming but now it’s just smarmy crap.
This year Hallmark is introducing girl gets girl and boy gets boy movies. Dad is portrayed as the big bad homophobe. Instead of returning to meet an old flame the protagonist comes to town with their SO.

And then, together, they save the ranch, house, library, the whole town or Christmas itself!

Every Hallmark movie ends with the couple kissing ONCE just before the ending credits.

A riddle: What has 15 actors, 4 scenes, 2 writers and 1 plot line? Answer: Every Hallmark movie ever! (you can also add Life Time to that!)

And every cozy murder or fantasy mystery.

Even the comics know. Watch one Hallmark Christmas movie and you’ve seen them all.

There’s another plot line where a woman was abused/unappreciated, goes out on her own, gets revenge, and lives happily ever after…

Well, there’s nothing like knowing your market and fulfilling it. Result = $ales.

And judging from a Facebook meme, the promo shot always has the man in green and the woman in red.
