“ASAP” (no periods, please) does not rhyme with “me”. The thing is not read out letter by letter, but as though ’tis one word: “ay-sap”. 20 years service in the military is my reference. :D
In my comment on last week’s Sunday strip, I remarked that I considered it to be one of the strongest pieces of evidence that Hobbes moves by himself but hadn’t been convinced that Hobbes is outside of Calvin’s imagination until a year later (1992) when I learned that Bill doesn’t see Hobbes as part of Calvin’s imagination.
I went on to say that the first panel made it clear that Calvin was alone but the last panel showed that Hobbes really had joined him. Someone replied that I had missed the possibility that Hobbes had already been with Calvin but Calvin was imagining himself to be alone so that he could imagine Hobbes creeping up on him to frighten him!
That was a clever piece of reasoning which I did indeed miss. As I said, however, that strip didn’t quite convince me that Hobbes is outside of Calvin’s imagination and it took Bill Watterson’s comment that Hobbes is “More real than any kid could make up, I think” to convince me that Hobbes is at least as complex as Calvin himself.
Today’s strip makes Bill’s point very well. Once again, Hobbes is shown to be a complex character who usually outsmarts Calvin with little difficulty.
Another thing that I like about today’s reprint is that it features one of my favourite drawings of Hobbes. Hobbes’s look of pure glee is even more pleasing to me than Susie’s look of malicious glee. I also like Hobbes bouncing around in a sack.
Our current state of affairs has a lot of people referring to Calvinball. There are days in my current job I feel like Calvin where he’s telling Susie to dump the water on him. Calvinball about sums up the past 12 months, doesn’t it?
He knows the word ‘pernicious,’ can improv a poem but struggles with 6+5. I can relate as math was never my strong suit. I was far better in language arts.

Calvin should consider himself lucky since Merriam-Webster’s definition of pernicious is: highly injurious or destructive : DEADLY

At least Susie’s better nature put up a bit of a struggle in panel six. Quickly overwhelmed, though.

The Calvinball strips always make me think of the last time we see Rosalyn.

From Susie’s perspective, that was too good an opportunity and no blowback as a bonus.
