I rarely go to the movies. I think the last movie I went to was with my son when he took me to see the first Hobbit movie. We have a few of the classics on DVD / Blueray (and a box of VHS in the garage awaiting proper disposal) or we rent movies so we can lay on the couch in sweats, eating junk food, drinking wine and pausing when we need to take a potty break.
@dflak I can’t remember the last theater movie we saw. Been over a decade at least. However, I do remember we had to leave 10 minutes in because the volume was set to max in that very small box of a theater. There also was a galaxy of cell phone screens, while a faint thread of chatter interwove with the movie theme. So say it was a disappointing event is like saying the sun is a light.
I’ve always gone to movies for the popcorn (no butter). When they updated the seating, I gave them up for good. My feet don’t touch the floor, circulation cut off mid-thigh, head pushed forward so I’m staring at my knees. Not built for people short in stature.
The last time I went to a movie theater there were too many people acting like they were watching TV at home with no consideration for those who came for the projected entertainment. Never went back. I also did not enjoy what I call “Dolby Abuse”. The only real reason to go to a movie theater these days is to see explosions too big for your living room.
Haven’t been to an indoor theater since before cell phones became common. It was bad enough before, there’s no way I’m willing to pay way too much money to put up with the current most common forms of rudeness.
And the only time outdoor theaters make sense is in the winter, when it gets dark enough, early enough, to be a reasonable option. Forget about summer time with it’s Daylight Screwus Time… it doesn’t get dark enough to show an outdoor movie until way too late, especially on work or school nights.
Besides, drive in theaters were never about the movie, they were about a place to make out with some privacy and not bugging any one else (except the nosy self righteous types) and you really need some darkness for that as well.

Theaters now have heated recliners and serve beer. I can’t stay awake for the whole movie.

You can’t pause the movie in the theater to go to the bathroom.
