You know which presidents also had bizarre beards? Lorenzo Snow and Joseph F. Smith, fifth and sixth presidents of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the former’s sister was a plural wife of Joseph Smith, the latter being Joseph Smith’s nephew).

Definitely extra credit.

Wasn’t there a song about Rutherford’s beard? “It hides the dirt on Grandpa’s shirt . . .”

We need to share this with historian Heather Cox Richardson. I don’t think the history books given RBH’s beard enough credit.

This whole comic story plot with Rutherford Hayes was sketchy at first, but now the beard is beginning to grow on me.

The ’Richard’s Poor Almanac’ recounting Hayes and the White House Easter Egg roll has to come up – it’s why kids always associate ‘Rutherford B. Hayes’ with ‘Fun’ after all!

Just read yesterday that Hayes was given the first Siamese cat brought to America.

I know beards are more popular now than they were, say, 50 years ago, but unfortunately we may never see a president with facial hair in my lifetime. (Actually, now that Ted Cruz has a beard we have our first bearded Senator in ages, but he’s unlikely to make it to president and that’s a good thing.)
