Thoreau was not all that solitary at Walden. He made regular trips into Concord. His house was only two miles away. His mother and sister brought him a basket of baked goodies, including doughnuts, every weekend. He was a regular for dinner at his buddy Ralph Waldo Emersonâs place. As the historian Richard Zacks put it âLet it be known that Nature Boy went home on weekends to raid the family cookie jar.â The rich kid spent a couple years glamping.
For a while when I was a kid, we had a school superintendent who wouldnât close school for anything short of nuclear winter, and for one storm the weather guy got tired of reading the whole list and said⊠âeverythingâs closed, except for [my school] of course.â I laughed, and cried.

I imagine that many essential workers have felt that way for the past year. All businesses are shut down except for the one you work at.

We got snowed in once at Motorola WHQ. Slept that night in our cubes and offices. Really tough on the alcoholics around 6PM.

Being an essential worker has its perks. Going to work is great. Getting to work is a pain.

I no longer believe in this duplex theory unless it fits the definition of a âPolish Flatâ.
