I cannot even get CLOSE to IMAGINING that I might like to put myself in a situation that results in something called “screaming barfies”… and that was BEFORE I realized what it was. Yipes! I’m a mittens AND gloves kinda person when it gets cool enough to set Jello.
i never known to call it a “screaming barfies”. that warm sensation from a frostbitten like condition was always uncomfortable, but then maybe it wasn’t a major health issue when I had it as my fingers are still intact and work very well – managed to type this with all fingers at about 30 words per minute.
The mineral exploration firm I worked for hired a local on a job in Jamaica. He was a good worker, so they used him on the next job, in Northern Saskatchewan, in January. His hands got very cold; but he toughed it out, and the pain went away. He thought that was a good thing. He lost most of his fingers.
I was stationed in Nebraska when I was in the USAF. In the really cold part of winter (-20°F or lower, we’d come in from repairing an airplane, take our gloves and mittens off (yup, both) and then run our fingers under cold water (hot would just be too painful to contemplate) and let our fingers warm up enough so that we could hold a pencil to do the paperwork for the repair.
Frazz14 hrs · Look, if people can talk fondly of a fish called a “crappie,” there could easily be one out there called a “screaming barfie.” From what I can tell, the crappie did nothing to deserve a name like that, and if there IS a screaming barfie, maybe it’s just as innocent.
Names can be powerful. After all, no one was particularly interested in eating slimeheads until they were renamed orange roughy, and now people can’t get enough of them.
But still. If there’s a screaming barfie out there other than the frozen-fingers screaming barfie, I’m leaving it alone. I don’t even particularly care for the kind I get when I’m in the cold too long.

It’s when they stop hurting that you really worry.

Why do they call it tourist season if they won’t let us shoot ’em?

Frostbite HURTS when sensation comes back, and no sympathy is forthcoming from those who haven’t been stricken. And “screaming barfies” is on the Net.
