Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for April 21, 2021

Everybody know the soprano is the star of the opera.

It’s all fun and games until the club leaders have a power struggle and those “slimy girls” end up taking over.

The reason Bill didn’t want Calvin and Hobbes animated is because he would have a difficult time finding suitable voice actors for the two titular characters, since each reader has a different idea of what they sound like.

With that said, this one pretty much confirms Calvin would be voiced by a woman, since I don’t think a lot of men can do sopranos. (Except for castratos, but don’t look that up unless you want to be sickened.)

I love it…..

Calvin must sound like a drill Sargent with a thrown out back.

“That just is ’til my voice changes!”

The funny thing is, around the time his voice changes he probably doesn’t think of girls as slimy any more.

I never thought of girls as slimy etc. Always found them much more fun to play with.

If it changes, you might be a girl and not realize it…. ;-)

Quiet, First Tiger Hobbes, while Calvin the Bold squeaks, er speaks! :D

Wattterson would not allow any marketing, even though I would have like to have a stuffed Hobbes to place on a shelf.

I’m just dying to hear the entire anthem now.

I would love to see this in color just to see how red Calvin’s face would be in that final panel!

Who is more critical in leadership positions, the provider or consumer of tuna fish sandwiches?

This argument is getting pretty gross!

Bill Watterson explains in “The Calvin and Hobbes Tenth Anniversary Book” that the GROSS Club was inspired by a club he formed with the boy next door. Both clubs are notable for having only two members.

He also explains that Calvin actually does many things in the strip which he only imagined himself doing in his real childhood.

There have been recent comments about me taking this strip “too literally” in accepting that Hobbes sometimes does things when Calvin isn’t around. I have tried to explain that seeing Hobbes do things when Calvin wasn’t around only made me wonder if he could be real as I knew that Calvin MIGHT be imagining what Hobbes was doing. I have also tried to explain that Calvin seems to be genuinely ignorant of the things he MIGHT have been imagining Hobbes doing which suggests that he didn’t really imagine them.

As I have also stated, I was finally convinced that Hobbes isn’t a figment of Calvin’s imagination when I read that Watterson had been asked if Hobbes was real and had replied “More real than any kid can make up, I think.” Bill Watterson qualifies the comment as just his opinion but it shows that he did think of Hobbes as being beyond Calvin’s imagination.

I’ve always imagined Calvin with a high voice.

Sopranos rock!

It saddens me to think how much of my life so far has been spent in meetings that devolve into bickering as quickly as this one does…

I’m the Chief Dunderhead.

This strip has always impressed me. The way each line builds on the last is such masterful writing.

I feel an immediate disbandment coming.

For Hobbes: Kunal Nayyar, tigers are from India, after all.

The G.R.O.S.S. club works just barely more effectively as the U. S. Congress.

Reminds me of the guy in the hospital who was moaning and groaning when his neighbor asked him why he was in so much pain, he replied, ‘Castration, who are you here?’ To which the neighbor replied, ‘Circumcision’. To which the guy yelled,’THAT’S THE WORD, THAT’S THE WORD!!!!”

After all these years, Calvin has not gotten any older. Better see a doctor!
