I’m planning on making a haiku book once I come up with a goal of one hundred haiku, but it takes time to come up with some when you’ve got — so far written — nine (eight on on side of one page with one haiku on the opposite side of same page).
I’m also planning on making a book of haiku based upon The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Saints — of which Brian Crane and I are members as well as a few other GoComics commenters — with a goal also of one hundred haiku, but only got eight so far.
I’ve written and published ten novels. I use Stephen King’s method. Sit down and write a page a day and at the end of year you’ve got a book. I didn’t say they were good novels.
One way to unblock the flow is to write out one’s frustration with being blocked. Let anger and frustration flow through the pen or keys using whatever terms come to mind. Kind of like whacking a pillow to vent one’s irritation at some combination of grit in the soul, but much more applicable for a writer. Also like punishing the pc for not being more helpful. Getting out the digital antipathy clogging one’s inner machinery.
Within a relatively short time, . . . if the instruments survive the beating :{ ) . . . one’s mind will begin to produce that most important facet, the theme. If you don’t have that, you don’t have a hope. So, maybe another day?
At least, that’s been my experience. It’s from the whatever works philosophy of getting things done.
I always start by describing a scene. This description often does not start the story, and sometimes doesn’t even appear in the story, but it gets things started.

It is possible to come up with an idea while walking and then go to the computer with your idea. I don’t think that staring at the computer helps.

Once upon a time, a woman was trying to write a story….

She could write …
… a children’s book using synonyms,
… or a tome applying words that mean the same thing,
… or a volume employing analogous terms,
… or a novel utilizing related expressions …

Good thing Opal doesn’t need a thesaurus – they became extinct millions of years ago.

Earl, if Opal had asked you for a Thesaurus, you’d have brought her a dinosaur. Don’t pretend like this isn’t true!

Earl is an idiot, just like Trump supporters. How can he know about a Thesaurus?
zeexenon over 3 years ago
Well, Opal, I suggest you read all children’s books first, starting with the Brothers Grimm.
