How about a sign that just says āPANICā? Or āATTACKā. Or both. How about any two of the above? I think itās the start of a screenplay for a cartoon.
Of course, thereās the possum at night method. Freeze in the middle of the road, then, when your car stops, sit there blinking for a few seconds before slowly shuffling off to the side. Theyāre just lucky that their eyes are so reflective.
Iām noticing natural selection working in my area over the past 30-40 years. When squirrels began coming back en masse, (reduction in suburban pesticide use?), they were often found flattened on the roadway. They always dithered while dodging cars, and therefore got hit. But over the years, they have been acting less like over-amped chihuahuas and instead picking a path out and sticking with it. The result, of course, is that weāre now overrun with squirrels. Time to buy some suburban pesticide, you think?

The best way to keep from hitting a squirrel is to try and hit it.
