Legend has it that in the late ‘60s a woman in New York City bought a potted cactus. Not being able to figure out how often to water it, she got a mail subscription to a Phoenix newspaper. When it rained in Arizona, she’d water it.
I grow cacti in my yard in western New York. It survives winters with temps of 10 below zero, long rainy periods, and long times of hot and dry. It just doesn’t seem to care much about receiving any care. Be careful weeding around it. It does care about that.

Does the cactus shrink to a smaller size?

Don’t forget, cacti don’t need much water. Look how they survive in the desert with only two drops of rain per year.

I read in a gardening book that a woman had a cactus. She subscribed to a Phoenix newspaper and whenever it reported rain, she watered it.
