There’s a Holland, Michigan… but no Vietnam, Michigan.

I never knew any Vietnamese woman to dress so immodestly; from the arrival of the “Boat People” who were given refuge in the city I lived then until when I retired recently.

“…everyone looks American…”. An idea that seems to have been conveniently forgotten by one of our major parties.

I so love Kim’s style. She doesn’t embarrass Alex but she turns this into a learning moment

Alex is clearly American. Gave a world history quiz. Blank maps of various continents. Needed to name at least five countries on each. One student identified Bulgaria as the United States (but, the student then realized the need to identify Romania as Canada).

I remember the Asian-looking guy, Detective Nick Yemana on “Barney Miller”, who was from Oklahoma. The only “Asian” thing I ever saw him do: he was eating lunch with chopsticks while taking a crime report over the phone. One of the chopsticks broke. He said, “Just a minute, let me get a pencil.” He replaced the broken chopstick with a pencil and continued eating and taking the report.

The FOUNDING FATHERS of the United States were Puritans, who were BRITISH CELTIC! So if you’re referring to United States citizens as Americans, this is accurate. Without the British, there would be no Human Rights, and EVERYONE would still be living in the DARK AGES!

I, myself, am a born and raised Bermudian. But I will never look or sound Bermudian. I just don’t have it in me. I’m in my fifties, and not too long ago, I was mistaken for being from the Philippines.

I actually find it amusing when people think I’m from places I’ve never been.

The problem is that, except for “Encarta”, that is still relevant today… Not looking “American” and not knowing where an Asian country is… My new daughter-in-law of Japanese descent was harassed in a dog park near Rock Creek Park a month ago with a crude anti “Chinese” epithet.

Well, it can work both ways. I was bazaar shopping in Israel, and if I kept my mouth shut, the vendors would invariably address me first in German. In the 70’s, when cashing an American Express travelers check, wearing the then-typical wire rim glasses and platform shoes, the bank teller looked at my face and said, “Are you Swiss?”

I assured them that I grew up in Florida.
