What we call locust are actually cicadas. The locust there referring to here and in the bible are what we call grasshoppers.

They don’t bite? Then how do they do all that damage to crops? They must do something.

I know how he feels. I went for a bike ride yesterday and I was attacked by two cicadas. I think they were trying to mate on my neck.

Cicadas or locusts? Some people in the US call the periodical cicadas “locusts” and I guess that is what McPherson is doing here. It’s a good, timely joke.

If they were locusts — or even some of our locust-like grasshoppers — that guy is in trouble. Indeed, they appear to be swarming like locusts. If nothing else, he’s likely to be naked when they leave.

One of the entomological mysteries is the disappearance of the Rocky Mountain Locust (Melanoplus spretus) at the end of the 19th century. The last big locust plague in the US destroyed farms across the Great Plains. One swarm was estimated at 198,000 square miles.
