When I read Bill Mauldin’s book, “The Brass Ring” he wrote about the most moving, the most sincere and honest Memorial Day speech ever. It was by General Truscott, whom Mauldin had accompanied on trips to the front lines in Italy. Here is a good description and it is well worth reading:
Unfortunately, today, there are so many who don’t have a clue when called to serve their country. We are free today because of the heroes who gave the ultimate sacrifice. All my heroes are gone except two. My dear brother and brother-in-law! Both Naval vets! My past is gone but never forgotten…their memory is eternal.
When others ran from the danger hoping it will pass them by……there are those that run towards the danger to stop it even if it costs them their lives. No color, no creed, no religious belief got in their way. All they wanted was Peace. They are the sons of God.
In Flanders FieldsIn Flanders Fields, the poppies blowBetween the crosses, row on row,That mark our place; and in the skyThe larks, still bravely singing, flyScarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days agoWe lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,Loved and were loved, and now we lie,In Flanders fields.Take up our quarrel with the foe:To you from failing hands we throwThe torch; be yours to hold it high.If ye break faith with us who dieWe shall not sleep, though poppies growIn Flanders fields. Too many survived the (fill in the blank) war, but their life was so drastically changed that they should also be listed as a casualty.

Also lets not forget all the brave women who lost their lives during those times. While the good book does not say it they are daughters of God.

Well put. We had too many by 1776, and we’ve kept on adding to the number ever since. Will we never learn?
