By that definition, all critics are long dead! Now we only have failed artists taking out their failure on talented ones!! Of course, good artists are rare too, because now, there are cabals in each genre who pat each other on the back and ridicule anyone who dare question their norms or differ from them. Take poetry nowadays!

“In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little, yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face is that, in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. But there are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defense of the new. The world is often unkind to new talent, new creations. The new needs friends.”

“I may not know anything about Art, but I know what I like” is a wholly valid position. Tastes vary. But a good critic likely sees things you don’t see, and cares about things you don’t care about. The more one devotes oneself to an art form, whether as creator or consumer, the higher one’s standards become. Criticism is, by nature if not by necessity, elitist.

How do you tell between a good painting and a bad painting? First, you have to look at 100,000 paintings…

One of the best critics of his era was Edgar Alan Poe. But alas, nevermore.

I believe Broomie that he just defined the difference between “critic” and “influencer”.

Good criticism must be even-handed and based on reasonable criteria, but it also requires good writing and an edge. No pablum wanted!
