In science class, I used “PEZ” as a little reminder that in a neutral atom P = E = Z: the number of Protons (P) = the number of Electrons (E) = the Atomic Number (which is represented by the letter Z).
By definition, the Atomic Number (Z) of an element is the number of Protons it has in its nucleus. For an atom to be Neutral (have no net charge overall), the number of positive charges (Protons) must be “balanced” by the number of negative charges (Electrons).
