some elementary schools in California were on the 45 - 15 program when i lived there. 9 weeks in school then 3 weeks off. all year round. not very good if you had kids in middle or high school. it was difficult to plan vacations
the parents should wait to celebrate until after he is out the door and on the way to school
pearl&p: It depended (in Calif., in the town in which we lived) on the school, sort of- our daughter, who was 7 years older than our son, went for a couple of years to a year-around school, while our son was in a 9-month school with 3 months vacation in the summer. That was a lot of fun, trying to plan things and make sure the kids were always safely covered.
The truth is, American summer vacation is far too long as it is. Retention of knowledge is so poor over a three-month break that the first few months of the new term are spent trying to reteach what had been covered the previous year.
Even if we don’t bring our total number of school days up to the levels of the better-performing countries, if we simply shortened the summer break and lengthened winter and spring breaks we’d get more learning for our buck.
