This is a good time to run a thought past my brain trust here in GC. Yesterday my son and I were talking about the present and future, and how in several ways we had surpassed the wonders shown in The Jetsons 50-some years ago. We have lots of robots but humanoid ones seem to be less practical.
He then told me about somebody who built robots that were made for agility and were demonstrating it via a parkour demonstration. I started to extrapolate that and realized what should have been obvious: with technology we have now it is perfectly possible to make robots of almost any size (as long as we stay within the hardware limits) and form that can perform any task we can describe and can access processing power and data from outside themselves. Wireless data connections and today’s processor sizes mean that the smallest devices can be extensions of a human expert’s body. We can even use our own minds to decide what a task might entail and download software for the unique task at hand. Think of it: that means a surgical robot could be programmed to innately avoid delicate locations, subject to explicit instructions from a surgeon.
