Tried it once when I was 10, me and my friend Steve. We both threw up. I hid it well, he cracked under pressure from his mum and told on me. His mum called my mum. Never tried it since.
Never had the urge to try smoking. My mom smoked like a chimney because she grew up during a time when smoking was what everyone did. She tried to quit but couldn’t. I saw what it did to her and my brothers who smoked and it just didn’t look appealing.
And now smoking is EXPENSIVE. Even more of a deterrent.
Liggett and Myers — L&M — balanced blend…gives good sellout from end to end…I still remember that jingle from 1965. Otherwise, You Tube provides old commercials for entertainment.
Classic. This is Dbry at its best and what comics should be. An outrageous representation of evil (not smoking itself, but its predatory marketting) in an imaginary character that your not sure if it’s supposed to be real or not and the great punch line at the end emphasizing its evil nature. You diligently read 30 year old comics as they come out daily for the feeling you get on those special days when Trudeau nails it.
Worked on a project with my future long term lady friend. Every hour she’d go out for a smoke. My first comment — “Those are bad for your health.” Shrug.Second comment — “Aren’t those really expensive?” Pause. Shrug.Third comment — “Smoking really ages your face.” THAT struck a nerve. She finally quit in 2001, but it was too late. She died in 2004.
Mr.Butts looks so darned OBSOLETE in modern times, considering what else is popular on the market these days.He can mount the CAMEL Camel and ride offinto obscurity.
When W.C. Fields had his radio show with Edgar Bergen&Charlie Mc Carthy,it was sponsored by Lucky Strike.
Fields would make repeated refererences to an imaginary son named Chester,Somebody finally figured out thatCHESTER FIELDS was the name of a competitor cigarette,
In 1966, at the age 12, all I needed was a quarter and a dime as cigarette machines were nearly everywhere. The only thing was you had to be careful about which brand you chose. Marlboro, Winston, and Salem were OK, but other less popular brands could sit in the machines for months, and stale cigarettes went up like kindling when you lit them.
When this series ran, a cigar/martini craze was happening. All it took was for me to switch, for literally less than a couple of months, from cigarettes to cigars for me to quit tobacco permanently.
Didn’t even inhale the cigar smoke…the nicotine simply absorbed through my gums and made me feel very sick.

Someone should tell Mr. Butts to invest in vaping technology if he’s depending on the children.

As a kid, to buy a pack, I’d just say “My mom wants…” Easy.

I have faint memories from my childhood, roughly 100 years ago, of “candy cigarettes”. I hope those people are still in jail…
