As a boy and teen, I used to fish off the local bridge. One of my methods was to cast the line out and pull it in slowly. I learned how to hook up the bait in such a way that it twitched like a wounded fish. It was a very successful technique.
One day as I was trolling in the line, I caught a fish. As I continued to reel it in, my pole suddenly bent to its maximum and the line went slack. I then reeled in half a fish.
Was trolling off the FL. Keys once. Something took my line, started to run, I fought it to near the boat when it took off in a run which made the reel smoke, then it stopped. I reeled in the remains of big kingfish which had been hit by a shark. What I had left was delicious.

So, Santiago should have taken her to sea that day – she would have hauled in that marlin.

He’s caught more than one like that from the sound of her remark. That really gives a new meaning to the name of “bone fish”.

A common problem salt water fishing. More than once I got my catch up on the pier only to discover a shark had beat me to it!
