I’m no seamster, but I think an ice-skating dress of denim isn’t pretty. I also am unfamiliar with gussets.

It’s a good thing Patty is a “rare gem”. We wouldn’t want many like her.

With a denim skating costume, maybe she could go as an Ice-skating cowgirl. And some of those cowboy/cowgirl costumes do have lots and lots of sequins, and fringe too.

Back in the day when this was written, costumes were not as blinged up as they are now. Think of Peggy Fleming’s Olympic chartreuse dress and Dorothy Hamill’s pink one. Very simple “leotard” dresses. Both made by their mothers. Not a sequin to be found. Those dresses probably cost about $20 for the fabric since the labor was free. Now those Olympic costumes cost in the thousands….some made by real designers like Vera Wang (she did Nancy Kerrigan’s Olympic dress. – side note – Vera Wang had been a pretty high level figure skater once). It’s gotten crazy out there. As an adult figure skater who is competitive in adult events, I can tell you that many of us spend hundreds on a dress with bling. It’s really nuts out there with the costumes. LOL.

Was polyester double-knit popular on fashion in the 1970’s, mostly on pants/slacks/jeans?

I know she’s not very apt academically, but this is indicative of a longer-term problem.

PP does not seem to be the kind of person who is obsessed with fashion.

This storyline was the basis for the TV special “She’s a good skate, Charlie Brown”.

Ugh! Shades of polyester double-knit EVERYTHING from the seventies. Light blue leisure suit anyone?

Contact the comic strip Big Nate. A few weeks back the story arc was Nate Wear.

Denim cheaper than polyester? I could swear last time I was anywhere with fabrics that had denim that it was more expensive than polyester. Then again things could, and probably have, changed between ’74 and ’21.

I’ve always said Peppermint Patty is the poster child for cognitive dissonance.
