At least he remembered their anniversary and bought her a card and is writing a sweet message. He gets major points from me for that. I can forgive him losing track of the years.
It’s easy to remember the year, but it can be difficult to remember exactly how many years it has been when there are a lot of them between that date and this one.
Both my husband & I have trouble remembering the exact date of our anniversary for 2 reasons: 1) we didn’t choose the date (and THAT is a long story); 2) we always celebrate our anniversary on Labor Day Weekend…the whole weekend.
When the marriage works, the years don’t matter so much, since they seem to fly by so fast. The Spousal Unit and I are more than half-way through the 3rd decade, so I can understand Mr. Dear’s difficulty.
My loving wife and I were married for 34 years and the only thing she could ever remember was the month. Every year she would ask me the day and how long we were married. Sadly she died in March and will never need to ask me anymore. I miss her so much.
To be fair, the month and day stay the same but the year keeps changing. I can hardly keep up with days of the week now that I don’t go to the office any more. Nowadays, how long we’ve been married is a math exercise. [If I can figure out the current year.] (55 years now)

Fred, so married people live longer, or does it just seem longer?
