That typewriter was made after you and I were, John. But, like us, it is old…

Dora’s in for an even bigger shock when her father (now her age, and rather handsome) strolls into the room.

At least it is an electric, (possibly an IBM Selectric). It could have been a manual type where you really had to press each key.

The original art is a little confusing; it looks like the woman by the typewriter and the woman in the memory bubble are the same person.

Anyone else think of the scene where Worf & Co. are in the elevator in the replica Vegas casino?

With her husband’s body lying nearby dead of a “self-inflicted” gunshot to the back, Dora thought it wise to get his suicide note just right before typing it.

If you want to have some fun, put a rotary dial phone in front of a young person, or a slide rule. . . .

IBM made an electric typewriter like that one before they upgraded it to the Selectric. I learned typing on the pre-Selectric IBM typewriter in a Summer school session in 1963. My father, who could touch type, encouraged me to take the typing class because you wouldn’t always have a secretary around when you needed a document prepared. It came in handy many times, but especially after I became a software developer.

I have a 1950ish Royal typewriter in my class room. The kids are amazed by it. They love the bell that sounds when you need to return the carriage for the next line. Dad bought it used in 1971 so all four of us kids could do our term papers on it. Being the youngest of the 4 gave me more practice.

I have a typewriter that has the distinction of being selected to be a calendar pinup. Eight years ago, shopping for a 2014 calendar, I found one from Andrews McMeel, entitled Vintage Typewriters. I browsed through the images, curious if just maybe my Dad’s Hermes 3000 (long since passed along to me) had made the cut. Lo and behold, there it was! Of course I had to buy the calendar, which I still have.

I still have the typewriter, too, even though I haven’t used it in over 30 years.
